In March 2023, Lifeworks trained representatives of 20 parishes within the Kakamega district of Kenya, teaching them how to make and apply 18-day compost, and lactobacillus and fish hydrolysate fertiliser. The group was assembled by CARITAS Kakamega, the social development arm of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega. Since the initial training, one parish has recruited over 100 farmers to conduct dissemination trainings and establish demonstration plots in time for the planting season.
The aim of the partnership with CARITAS Kakamega is to use the organisations’ networks to scale up the use of Lifeworks technologies across the two counties. The scope of activities will cover food, water, community, environment impact, and tracking soil carbon stocks.
CARITAS Kakamega is the social development arm of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, a not-for-profit institution serving 46 parishes in Kakamega and Vihiga Counties of Western Kenya. This arm of the church is focussed on promoting sustainable socio-economic human development among 7,000 individuals within the region.
